Tooley's dictionary of mapmakers, 1999-2004 vol. 1, p. 143 (Blaeu, Willem [Guilielmus, Guilhelmus] Jansz. [Alcmarianus; Janssonius; Janszoon] (1571-1638). He studied with Tycho Brahe. Founded his company in 1596, initially as globe and instrument makers but soon expanded into publishing maps, topographical works and sea charts. From ca. 1621 Willem adopted the name Blaeu to differentiate himself, his firm and his family from that of Johannes Janssonius. Appointed chartmaker to the East India Company in 1633. On sis death the business passed to his sons Joan and Cornelis)
