Notas: Resumen: As the final salvaging campaign on the site of the collapsed building draws to a close, cologne city archives are assessing the damage and the state of the reconstruction effort with a particular focus on the conservation of damaged documents. Each item, and more or less each individual page of almost 30 shelf kilometres of salvaged holdings needs at least a thorough cleaning and adequate repackaging; in many cases, further restorative measures will need tio be taken. It is estimulated that all in all, more than 6000 man years will haveto be put in for conservation alone.
In this paper, the heads of conservation and the assistant director take al look at the perspectives for this work, as the first items reappear from restoration and first, local processes for mass treatment are being set up.
While a detailed catalogue of measures will have to be developmep in 2011, a general strategy has emerged in the course of 2010 and has been reflected with the community - most notably the professional advisory board. This strategy envisages three pillars for the restoration effort. Apart from a large restoration centre on the outskirts of Cologne (opened in December, 2010) we will cooperate with other institutions to make use of available conservation capacities and with commercial service providers in the field. The general workflow distinguishes between a first phase of basic conservation and restoration measures which can be taken with all items, regardless of their state of identification. Later on, more sophisticated (and costly) restoration processes will be priorised with respect to collections, individual value of the object in question and availability of sponsorship.
