Notes: Sumario: The documentation of the social movements is not being adequately collected in national or state archives. Over the past ten years, many archives have closed and researchinto contemporary history has suffered as a result. Independent archives, however, have increased in number and are of a better quality and more varied than ever before. This is despite operating in very difficult financial conditions. The largest independent archive in Germany is the " Archiv für alternatives Schrifttum (afas)" which has existed for over twenty years. This article gives an overview of the work and the collections of the archives. It also pleads for better funding of independent archives in general by local authorities, the sate and non profit making organizations, in order to secure records and documents of the new social movementss. Finally the article argues for a single independent archives for the whole Germany
Sumario: La documentación producida por los movimientos sociales no ha sido adecuadamente conservada dentro de los archivos estatales o nacionales. A los investigadores de la historia contemporánea no les resulta fácil realizar su trabajo. El archivo independiente más grande de Alemania, el "Archiv fur alternatives Schrifttum (afas)", existe desde hace más de veinte años.
