A conservation case study of Persian miniatures

Notas: Sumario: Persian miniatures are an important element in the history and culture of Iran. The development of the books arts and miniature painting began in the twelfth century and borrowed richly from other cultures in the region. Various shahs and sultans generously supported the existence of the book arts and miniature painting. They established schools of learning that simulated the fine art and craftsmanship found in their creations. The Shahnameh epitomizes the exquisite form and color of the arts of Persia.This paper details a conservation case study of a 17th century Shahnmeh from the Departament of Rare Books and Special Collections of the Princeton University Liibrary and briefly relates the history of the Persian miniature and its creation, their method of manufacture and the materials employed. The case study relates the conservation of a severely deteriorated and damaged illuminated Persian manuscript, which rendered it virtually inaccessible to researchers and scholars. The manuscript contains extremely water-soluble pigments and inks, which makes the conservation treatment much more complex and daunting. In the course of the conservation former repairs of massively applied glassine paper were removed by local application of moisture. Minature supports that had been damaged by the copper-based pigment or verdigris were carefully conserved using selected Japanese papers and Klucel G in absolute ethanol
Resumen: Los manuscritos iluminados persas, con su rica caligrafía e ilustraciones, fueron obra de artistas, buenos calígrafos y de eruditos. En ellos se encuentran facetas de la cultura persa, a lo largo de los siglos, con temas tan variados como la teología, las artes, el gobierno, la filosofía y la ética. Una de las obras maestras de esta colaboración fue el shahnameh del libro de los Reyes, que fue escrito hace mil años y es un digesto de saberes y acopio de conocimiento en cualquier materia. Este artículo versa sobre las técnicas de iluminación en los manuscritos persas y detalles de su conservación según el proyecto llevado a cabo por la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Princeton, Sección Islámica de la fundación Garrett. El manuscrito contiene pigmentos de tinta desconocidos para los químicos de occidente lo que hace más problemática su restauración. Se determinó reparar algunos trozos dañados con papel japonés.
