Notes: Sumario: Between August 2005 and April 2006, the German Research Association (DFG) funded a preparatory project at the state archives of Northrhine-Westfalia (LAV NRW) to analyse the requirements and to establish a framework for a national programme for the retroconversion of paper-based finding aids. This programme is intended to support the ongoing efforts within the German archival community towards a digitization of finding aids. A survey conducted by the LAV NRW in Jan. 2005, reveled that in Germany public archives approximately 55-60 Mill. records in paper-based finding aids still await conversion to a digital format. On the basis of these figures, the preparatory project focussed on four different areas: 1) Establishing criteria for the fundability of individual conversion projects; 2) organising a workflow for the programme; 3) ensuring that technical standards be met; and 4) estimating the cost for the entire programme. These tasks were adressed in close co-operation with more than 100 representatives from German public archives, with producers of archive software, librarians with esperience in organising large-scale conversion programmes, academic scholars, and international experts. The preparatory projects has submitted a detailed final report ( available at www.archive.nrw.de/findbuch-digital), which stressed that only a co-ordinated effort funded by the DFG can ensure that German archives will gradually be able to meet the requirements of the public and academic researchers by providing digital access to their catalogues. Consequentyl, the report has been combined with a application to the DFG to fund a national programme for the retroconversion of finding aids
