Títol: Sélection d'un cuir de veau de tannage végétal destiné à la restauration de livres anciens : premiers résultats / Coralie Barbe...[et al.]
Notes: Sumario: Book conservators are facing daily the problem of selecting the appropriate new leather to replace and repair old ones. The Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), jointly with the Centre de recherches sur la conservation des documents graphiques (CRCDG), is leading a project to select appropriate vegetable tanned calf leathers, whose chemical and physical qualities answer to long term conservation necessities. To this end, this study is using the conclusions of the European reports, Craft, Step and Environment. An inquiry, distributed to conservators and tanners, permitted to collect and to analyse 37 leather samples. After a first series of analysis, 10 leathers were selected on which a more complete analysis was performed. Unfortunately none of these met the recommendations established by the Environment project. In conclusion, questions were raised about the pertinence of level of these requirements, as well as the quality of modern leather. The study will be pursued to determine exactly the impact of each criterion of selection on the leather quality.
